GIVING GOODNESS
When you visit Santa Monica’s Byu-ti hair salon, you get much more than a cut and color. Whether it’s through high-quality products or pampering beauty treatments, the salon’s creator Natasha Sunshine aims to “give goodness,” a mission drawn from the Eastern tradition of providing service to others. In the front entryway, in fact, she’s printed those words on a “matra wall”—and she asked Orange22 to create an environment that reflected that way of being.
THE SCIENCE OF BYU-TI
Orange22 designed an Asian-inspired space that feels luxurious without feeling pretentious. It’s filled with natural woods in contrasting whites and darks, subtle botanical graphics, and dollops of deep pink hues throughout. Among the most important ways Byu-ti gives goodness to customers is through custom-blended products made of the most wholesome, natural ingredients, an exclusive offering from the salon.
CUSTOM CLEINT SERVICE
To highlight the service, Orange22 created The Byu-ti Bar, an interactive service area where specialists create hand-blended products on-site, according to customers’ specific needs. The pristine white bar features backlit glass jars, inside of which float preserved flowers and herbs—a playful nod to white-coat science laboratories, this one dedicated to the science of byu-ti.
POP BUDDHA’S
Byu-ti is a thoroughly luxe salon, but it’s thoroughly unlike most luxe offerings. Most high-end spaces influenced by Eastern culture, for instance, have a feeling of sober gravitas. Moreover, in an industry not known for its sense of humor (not a few salons have built their reputations on professional-grade snobbery), Byu-ti throws those norms out the door, paying homage to Asian culture with a sense of pop-culture whimsy. That includes small, smiling, pink Buddha’s, who—perched atop bright green shelves—spread goodness as only smiling, pink Buddha’s can.
